Working safely around electricity is one of the most important aspects of electrical work, and NFPA 70E is the standard that intends to safeguard employees during installation, inspection, or operation of equipment. Soon, the 2012 Edition of NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical Safety will be released. This revision cycle had 548 proposals introduced that included many proposed changes, additions and clarifications.

What can you expect from the new NFPA 70E? And how can you better protect your employees or yourself?

Some of the changes for 2012 to be covered include the following:
  • Footnotes previously found in the Hazard/Risk Category Classification Tables will be included within the table for each task.
  • Arc Flash Boundaries will be included in the Hazard/Risk Tables for each task.
  • A new Hazard/Risk Category Classification Table has been added for DC equipment.
  • A new table has been added for Approach Boundaries for DC Voltage Systems.
  • Elimination of the 125 kVA / 240 Volt exception with a new reference to IEEE 1584.
  • The sometimes confusing category 2* protection has been eliminated and the HRC tables now have been reformatted to reduce misapplication.
In addition, Jim will also take you behind the scenes with discussions about DC arc flash calculations, details of the IEEE 1584 125 kVA transformer exception and some of the latest arc flash research, testing and what it takes to perform an incident energy analysis.
